Sales Tip #3 - Get more visitors with nice URLs

Sales tip time again! After we have explained a few things about the title tag of your web pages and how to improve it in order to attract more users to your website (see Sales Tip #2), we want to talk about the second part of a Google search result: the URL (uniform resource locator, green in the screenshot below).

The uniform resource locator (URL) is the unique address of each and every web page that you enter in the address field of your web browser. The thing is, not only your visitors appreciate a descriptive URL that tells them what they can expect if they click on that link, also Google really likes to know what the page is about and uses the URL (beside other informations ...) to figure that out. This means the URLs you use have impact on the Google ranking for your website. Not only the Google search results will look cleaner, also every blog, Facebook, or other entry with your clean URL will describe much better what the link is leading to. Check out the URL of this page. Does it make sense?

Let's get back to the wedding invitation example in Sales Tip #2. The URL should contain the same keywords you use in the title of your page. If your page is about wedding invitations think about a URL like "yourdomain.com/wedding-invitations/card1" (don't use '_' or spaces instead of '-'). In case you sell other products as well change it to "yourdomain.com/products/wedding-invitations/card1".

How can you change your URLs? Your URL structure is basically the directory structure you use on your web server. If you use a content management system (CMS) you have to refer to the documentation of the specific CMS how to set the URL of your pages. Now, very important: Don't start rearranging all your web pages and directories! Google has indexed your pages, customers have added your pages to their favorites and so on. All of them would no longer work! Think about future web pages on your site and whether it makes sense to start with a well crafted URL structure for all new content like described above.

We know, for smaller sites it's much easier to stick to the rules above. If your site is growing and your dynamic content is growing as well, you will have ugly URLs with tons of parameters in it. But even if you need some kind of parameters in your URL, try to limit them to just two of them.

We hope these tips help and remember: Before you start playing around with your website structure, talk to your trusted web developer! And next week we will explain the last part of the Google search result, the description portion.

Now you are ready for our last episode regarding Search Engine Optimization (SEO), our Sales Tip #4 - Good page descriptions!
