Interview with Danielle from Wishbone Letterpress
When did you start letterpress printing?:
2008, but we opened Wishbone in 2011
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
We like all of the setup, the trouble shooting. And then the final product, you have control over everything, ink coverage, how deep the impression is. It feels amazing to pull that first print, this delicate thing on paper using these giant old machines.
What inspires you?:
My childhood. I lived in this house with amazing wall paper, it was the early 80's. Lot's of deep golds, greens and browns. Street art, fashion, nature, music and trips to new places.
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
We use a Chandler and Price, a Challenge (similar to a Vandercook), a Kelsey Star, and a Windmill. We mostly use rubber ink but our fluorescent colors are oil based. And cotton paper all the way!
How would you describe your artwork?:
We are capable of many different styles so this is hard to describe. But, we like to incite chuckles. A lot of our work is whimsical, bright, youthful, fun, hand drawn. And sometimes sophisticated, especially when dealing with wedding invitations.
What kind of products do you create?:
Calendars, coasters, wedding invitations, baby announcements, business cards, greeting cards etc.
Do you offer custom work?:
Where can we buy your products?:
Do you offer workshops? If yes, what kind of?:
Not yet, but maybe in the future.
Is there anything you wished you had known as a beginner?:
To start tracking our expenses earlier, and that marketing takes up a lot of time.
