Smudge Ink

50 Terminal Street, Building 2
United States
Smudge Ink is a stationery company and letterpress studio that was founded in 2002 by Kate Saliba and Deb Bastien. The duo first crossed paths in college and then again years later over their shared passion for design and illustration. Kate moved back home to apprentice and set up her own printing shop, and Deb thought she’d take a “break” from her career to learn the ropes. One crazy adventure led to another, and they’ve been creating fresh and fun correspondence ever since.

Interview with Kate from Smudge Ink
When did you start letterpress printing?:
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
The smell of the rubber based ink, the peaceful rhythm of a long run on the Chandler & Price, and the one-of-a-kind tactile result.
What inspires you?:
We draw much of our inspiration from everyday life: being mothers, conversations with friends and family, walks around town, and doing what we love whether gardening on a Sunday afternoon or being near the water. We find our most creative moments are when we’re out doing things that make us happy.
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
We use 3 different kinds of presses depending on what we're printing: Heidelberg Windmill, Chandler + Price, and Vandercook.
How would you describe your artwork?:
Bold, fun, approachable, and bright.
What kind of products do you create?:
Greeting cards, calendars, wrapping paper, gift tags, writing sets, and more, and custom stationery for all occasions.
Do you offer custom work?:
Where can we buy your products?:
