Interview with Ryan from Rise and Shine Letterpress and Design Studio
When did you start letterpress printing?:
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
Getting dirty, solving problems, admiring the finished product.
What inspires you?:
Being able to work in such an amazing building (it used to be a neighborhood hardware and grocery store), with such highly-engineered equipment is very motivating. Sometimes I question how I got to this point, and what I'd be doing if I hadn't discovered letterpress. Scary thought! That, and the recurring dream of a barn full of new-old-stock, factory fresh letterpress gear.
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
We have a selection of super-accurate Windmills set for printing and die cutting, hand-fed Chandler and Price platens, and a Vandercook 4. We also have a full film and platemaking department for extra fast turnaround times. We are open-minded when it comes to paper, sourcing what our clients request. We stock Crane's Lettra paper and envelopes for immediate-turnaround projects.
How would you describe your artwork?:
It comes out of a summer weekend 20 years ago. Or maybe it was yesterday.
What kind of products do you create?:
We print a collection of greeting cards, and we're happy to create anything our clients dream of.
Do you offer custom work?:
Do you offer workshops? If yes, what kind of?:
Sure, give us a call and let's set one up.
Is there anything you wished you had known as a beginner?:
The discovery is part of the journey, isn't it? You have to make mistakes to learn, so it probably is better to stay ignorant for as long as possible. Though, I wish I discovered letterpress 10 years earlier.
