Interview with Christopher from Porridge Papers
When did you start letterpress printing?:
back in 2003
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
The mesmerizing movements of the presses! I could pull up a chair and watch those cast iron beasts all day long. Also the impression that is left in the paper is just amazing!
What inspires you?:
Out of the box ideas! There is so much you can do with paper. Color, texture, scented, plantable. I always encourage people to use the paper as a color. When you combine the color and texture along side the transparency of the inks you can achieve amazing results!
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
We love our Vandercook #4 also our Chandler and Price and for long runs our Windmill. Also we can not forget about the 29" Challange paper cutter! Our house stock for paper is OURS and then of course lettra, french and anything else someone wants to provide. When it comes to ink we are partial to VanSon and Zipset.
What kind of products do you create?:
Everything from a single announcement to custom packaging. A lot of what we do lately has been on plantable paper. A couple getting married that is trying to be conscious of their paper choice to a company developing a package that they want to truly be recyclable. Add letterpress printing and the results are amazing and so tactile.
Do you offer custom work?:
yes
Do you offer workshops? If yes, what kind of?:
Yes we do. We have workshops in both letterpress and papermaking as well as other paper arts.
Is there anything you wished you had known as a beginner?:
How much fun it would be and how frustrating it can be! But do not be afraid to try and tinker until it works the way you want it to!
