Interview with Nykke from Paper Elephant
When did you start letterpress printing?:
2010
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
Being able to design and create something from start to finish is really rewarding. But one of my favourite things is to get people's reactions to seeing a design in person, especially custom clients, they usually squeal with delight.
What inspires you?:
I can't say I have any one source. It could be a font I discover that I just have to create something around, or maybe an image, a song, a pattern or a leaf on a tree. So many things can give you inspiration really.
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
Our Nellie is a 1963 Heidelberg Windmill T-platen. She's a lovely old beast who has never let us down. We mix all of our custom inks using rubber based inks, but we also use oil for some jobs, it just depends on the desired final result. Our preferred stock is Crane Lettra, it gives fabulous results every time, no surprises. But we love to experiment with other stocks, it's fun to discover the effect letterpress printing has on more unconventional materials.
How would you describe your artwork?:
We like to think we have a sweet and slightly quirky sense of humour and our own stationery range reflects this. Our Geek range is simple but very popular. And our Baby Truth range has been known to find it's way into many a baby shower gift basket. While our Woodtype series all started with a combination of our first moveable type purchase and our favourite Dave Matthews song. When it comes to our custom work we are guided by our clients desires but we are always meticulous in our approach.
What kind of products do you create?:
We have our own range of stationery that is still growing. At the moment it includes greeting cards, tags and a couple of posters. But we are working on expanding the range at the moment. We have also released a range of designs for customisable wedding stationery.
Do you offer custom work?:
yes
Where can we buy your products?:
The best place is direct from us! Via our website of course.
Do you offer workshops? If yes, what kind of?:
No we don't. Workshops are great but it's just not something we are set up for. Maybe one day...
Is there anything you wished you had known as a beginner?:
Start your inventory list early. It can be hard to keep track of how much stock you have if you don't!
