Interview with Matthew from The Palmetto Press
When did you start letterpress printing?:
Founded in October 2009 by Matthew Furr, The Palmetto Press was born from the purchase of a Chandler & Price Pilot (OS) press.
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
The notion that you can begin with an idea and concept and end with a final, tangible piece.
What inspires you?:
Printing is something I'm passionate about. I enjoy working through all of the stages from the design, platemaking/typesetting, printing, and even cleaning the press. Having experience in the entire graphics industry from printing, publishing, packaging, and finishing — I know the craft behind letterpress is what I enjoy the most.
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
I currently print everything on a Chandler & Price Pilot. I'm in search of a Poco Proof Press or any proof press for that matter. I prefer Crane Lettra for wedding invitations and business cards. As for stationary, greeting cards, and notes I use either French Muscletone or Mohawk Superfine papers.
How would you describe your artwork?:
My artwork is minimalistic, type oriented, simple, and functional. Often designed and inspired by the aesthetic hand-crafted lettering found in hand painted signs.
What kind of products do you create?:
I will design and print pretty much anything. Most of our work consists of greeting cards. Lately we've breached into the wedding market and we spend a good deal of time doing business cards, coasters and stationery.
Do you offer custom work?:
yes
Where can we buy your products?:
