Interview with Kim from Painted Tongue Studios
When did you start letterpress printing?:
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
There are a lot of different elements one must master to bring it together well: paper, ink, design, you machinery, and more. And when you bring all that together with skill, the results are beautiful.
What inspires you?:
As a designer, the inspiration is about how I connect with the client - how I get to know them, their tastes, and their sense of what is beautiful and interesting. I especially like projects that are unusual and unexpected. For my own artwork, my inspiration is in things that show strength. I have a fondness for structures. I also like to paint words and blend letterpress with painted text and imagery. I look to my own personal story, time, and place for my subject matter. I am just one artist in our studio. Together we have so many inspirations!
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
Our studio has a Vandercook 4 and a Heidelberg Windmill. Most of our job work is done on the Heidelberg. Artwork tends to be on the Vandercook, and we train others on it, when they're starting letterpress. We also have two Griffin etching presses on which we primarily print monotype, solar etchings, and linoleum cuts. Letterpress ink is usually Van Son. Paper varies per project.
What kind of products do you create?:
Invitations, Menus, Programs, Stationery, Business Cards, Fine Art
Do you offer custom work?:
Where can we buy your products?:
Do you offer workshops? If yes, what kind of?:
