Interview with Chris from Moxie Press & Co.
When did you start letterpress printing?:
late 2009
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
Though there are many steps in letterpress printing it's the process that fascinates me the most. It's also incredibly rewarding after you put so much labor into a project to see the end result. A labor of love, if you will.
What inspires you?:
Many other hobbies end up inspiring me, like photography, screen printing, calligraphy, etc. Mainly I come back to my roots and my connections in life. I'm originally from Philadelphia so the old world of American history and traditions inspire me. Wood type, craft and craftsmanship of all kinds. I'm enthralled in that same respect by Japanese culture, history and customs. Moveable type inherently began in Asia and that inspires me to always push myself to learn more letterpress printing as well as other alternative printing processes. I have some woodblock prints from Japan that make me want to learn new techniques for printing. I'm also inspired by technology. My goal is to blur the line of utilizing old traditional techniques of letterpress printing while still being tech-forward in my designs. I'd be a fool to think this art will be around forever, so if I came combine the seductive art of letterpress with the technology of today then there's a chance it will stick around a while longer.
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
Mainly the Chandler & Price, Craftsman 12x18 platen press is the workhorse of the shop. With 4000lbs of pressure per square inch it can really pack a punch ;) I also have a smaller 5x8 Kelsey clamshell press which can do a whole lot more than I thought it could when I originally purchased it.
What kind of products do you create?:
wedding invitations, business cards, birth announcements, posters, custom designs, custom die-cutting.
Do you offer custom work?:
Where can we buy your products?:
Currently we do not have an online store, but it's in the works.
Is there anything you wished you had known as a beginner?:
I'm still a beginner if you ask me. I've not been formally trained so whether it's as an artist or engineer I think half the fun is putting on different hats to make things work. I hope I never stop learning. Perfection is unattainable so I just keep learning and printing.
