About:
Impressus is a modern day letterpress studio located in Ottawa, Ontario. Our motto is the belief that nothing replaces the beauty of a handwritten note sent by snail mail. It seems that the hectic times we live in encourage us to revisit the old and the forgotten. The art of letterpress printing dates back to 1400s, yet in 2014 it still reminds us of what classic and streamlined elegance looks like. We specialize in small runs of business cards, greeting cards for any occasion, prints, gift tags, and other stationery goods, including personalized stationery for businesses and individuals alike. We also welcome the idea of working one-on-one with clients on custom designs for wedding invitations, baby announcements and other life events. We work with metal type and photopolymer plates. When we work with type, the text is composed by hand, letter by letter, and locked into the chase of the press, ready for printing. We print on our antique printing press, the Golding Pearl Improved No. 11, and use 100% cotton papers and rubber-based inks.

Interview with Karolina from Impressus
When did you start letterpress printing?:
July 2014
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
Letterpress printing is a true labour of love. It's a very meticulous and hands-on process which requires lots of time, patience and creativity. It's also a trial and error type of process. I really do learn a lot from my mistakes!
What inspires you?:
What attracted me to letterpress printing in the first place was its captivating beauty and elegance. I still find those aspects as inspiring today as I did when I first stumbled upon letterpress printed paper goods. I'm a huge fan of simple and streamlined designs and this is something that I try to convey in my prints. I guess simplicity is my inspiration. Sometimes less is definitely more.
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
I'm a proud owner of a Golding Pearl Improved No. 11. I print on 100% cotton papers (118 lb. cover weight and up) and use rubber-based inks. I also like experimenting with wood veneer and short pattern papers.
How would you describe your artwork?:
Minimalism and simplicity are at the core of my prints. I also like the rustic feel of wood veneer and short pattern papers and try to incorporate those textures in my designs.
What kind of products do you create?:
I specialize in small runs of business cards, greeting cards for any occasion, prints, gift tags, and other stationery goods, including personalized stationery for businesses and individuals alike. I also like working one-on-one with clients on custom designs.
Do you offer custom work?:
yes
Where can we buy your products?:
www.impressus.etsy.com
Do you offer workshops? If yes, what kind of?:
No
Is there anything you wished you had known as a beginner?:
Letterpress printing is a trial and error type of adventure. I know I have a lot to learn and there is so much room to grow. I learn something new every time I print!
