Interview with Rebecca from Do You Punctuate?
When did you start letterpress printing?:
What do you like best about letterpress printing?:
The way type feels when your fingers feel the bumps in the paper.
What inspires you?:
Nostalgia and rules. Letterpress is such a tactile yet controlled method of printing. It's great to push against these boundaries.
Which press(es), ink & paper do you usually use?:
I have two presses, One is an Adana 8x5 and the other is a Charlton and Cropper Improved Peerless press. Plenty of arm and leg power is used here! I use lots of types of inks, I haven't bought a fresh tub of ink because I usually salvage left overs from other print shops. I have a mixture of Oil, rubber and water based inks. As for paper–I use anything I can get my hands on. Yes cotton based paper is beautiful but not everyone can afford it, so I experiment with every type of paper to see how it reacts in the press. That's half the fun of this job.
How would you describe your artwork?:
A combination of contemporary meets traditional. The blocks and moveable type are used are of a certain time period, so my work naturally follows that route. I let my instincts guide me but the base elements are the original pieces I print from.
What kind of products do you create?:
Cards, stationery and bespoke commissions
Do you offer custom work?:
Where can we buy your products?:,
Do you offer workshops? If yes, what kind of?:
Yes, though very limited and are more for people who want to play with type rather than learn the skills of type setting. I have done one on one sessions, if you're interested please contact me.
Is there anything you wished you had known as a beginner?:
Always buy a bigger press than you think you need.
